About The Institution

Sanskrit Sahitya Parishad (Institute of Oriental Learning and Research)

(Registered Under the act XXI of 1860)

The Sanskrit Sahitya Parishat established in 1916, is a registered public Institute whose aims and objects are to disseminate Sanskrit learning and research in different branches of Indological studies and to store and maintain the ancient culture and glories of India.

In the year 1907 (1314 B.S.) a few lovers of Sanskritic culture in the northern part of Calcutta founded ‘Bagbazar Chātra Samiti’ with a view to popularise our ancient heritage. The two Sanskrit dramas Abhijñānaśakuntalam and Uttararāmacaritam were enacted by them. After a few years a group of students of Mulajor Sanskrit College also staged Veṇisaṃāhra in Sanskrit which was highly appreciated. In 1916 (1323 B.S., 21st Śravana) these two groups of students founded ‘Vaṅgīya Chātra Samiti’ with the same purpose, which after five months of activities was renamed as ‘Sanskrit Sahitya Parishat’ At first in a room of student’s library at Kolkata’s Bagbazaar area later in a rented second floor apartment at 27 R.G. Kar Road, Sanskrita Sahitya Parishat was established. By accumulating books and manuscripts from various places, the person who appeared most exhilarated and enthusiastic about the library was Pt. Janakinath Shastri . Later, on the request of the members of Sanskrit Sahitya Parishat, the then Mayor of Kolkata, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose had sanctioned a piece of land at 168/1 Raja Dinendra Street for Sanskrit Sahitya Parishat . Consequently the members of Sanskrit Sahitya Parishat opined to build up a house for proper maintenance of books and manuscripts. The construction of the building of Sanskrit Sahitya Parishat started in 1938 A.D. But at that time the Second World War was going on. So the construction work became delayed. Finally after the completion of the construction of the building in the year 1952 A.D. in the month of August. The academic work of Sanskrit Sahitya Parishat started regularly at first in the ground floor then in the second and afterwords in the third floor. Today this Sanskrit Sahitya Parishat is a treasure trove of knowledge which gives benefit to numerous students, teachers, professors and the scholars whoever comes and uses the books and manuscripts of this library. For the students of the colleges and the Universities this Institute is the best friend supplying all the books they are in need of; for the research the best possible editions in all their reprint are readily available and readers even if they are not member of the Institute are allowed the privilege of getting at a time as many books as they are in need of. Xerox copies, photocopies and scanned copies are also made available where the books are rare and out of print. Library–servicing is of encouraging nature and that accounts for the great and ever-increasing demand for membership. The functions of Sanskrit Sahitya Parishat are divided into the following categories:

Old building of the Parishat.

Dictionary Of Dialects and Sub Dialects of North and North East India, a research project was undertaken in collaboration with Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan, New Delhi, based on the MOU with Prof. Radha Vallabh Tripathi, The then Vice Chancellor, from 2010 to 2013. The Dictionary was proposed in the form of Sanskrit terms and there equivalents in Odia, Bengali, Bhojpuri and English. This project included the following dialects and sub dialects at the first stage:

  • Bhojpuri
  • Awadhi
  • Maithili
  • Bagheki
  • Bundelkhandi
  • Bangla
  • Odia

Anasuya Bhowmik : While doing her research work she located a manuscript of Vahnipurana in Sanskrit Sahitya Parishat library, which was very useful to prepare the critical edition of the Vahnipurana.
The facilities of SSP helped her also to prepare the critical edition of Vastumandana which was sponsored and published by IGNCA, New Delhi.

Pradip Kumar Majumder : On the financial assitance from the Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan (presently Central Sanskrit University) a project of five years’ term for “A Dictionary of Sanskrit – English Technical terms” in five volumes was undertaken in 2009. A very laudable effort that several volumes of Sanskrit English Dictionary of Technical terms on various specialised subjects like Mathematics, Astronomy , Geometry have been proposed to be published. The first volume was published in 2009 and the second and third volume is in process of publication. The second volume on Astronomy and the third volume on Architecture are in the process of publication. The entire project is being supervised by Prof. Pradip Kumar Majumdar along with the assistants - Bulbul Chakraborty , Rina Dutta , Rajib Chakraborty and Subrata Mondal. The topic of the 4th volume of the Dictionary is on medical science and there is also a proposal of more volumes on Chemistry, Botany , Zoology, etc. In this book terms are noted in Sanskrit language in Devanagari script, then the meaning in English and where ever possible the synonymous words are presented with explanation. The source books are also mentioned as per requirement. According to necessity, the History , Etymology, Mathematical deduction , Philosophical concepts are also noted here with references.
